KBE was formed in 1959 by the late philanthropist and developer extraordinaire, Simon Konover. A Holocaust survivor, Mr. Konover emigrated to the US at the age of 26, following World War II, and in the late 1950s, began developing retail centers in Connecticut. He formed his own construction company in 1959 – our ancestor – to construct his developments. The construction company was incorporated in 1966 as Sikon Corporation and for many years continued to serve as the in-house construction arm of Mr. Konover’s growing real estate empire.
In the mid-1980s, the construction company began to branch out, starting work with other clients and other markets, moving into higher education, K-12 schools, hotels and hospitality centers, and commercial office buildings. The company was renamed Konover Construction Corporation in 1986.
By the early 1990s, the company was fully independent from the real estate development group and operating as an independent construction firm.
Revenues and staff grew over time, and the firm continued to expand into other geographic markets and industries. The Mid-Atlantic office opened in 1999 in Columbia, MD and continues to grow and serve the retail, education, municipal, and federal markets.
In 2007, the firm was acquired in a senior management buy-out by long-time senior managers Mike Kolakowski, Eric Brown, and Simon Etzel – and renamed KBE Building Corporation in 2009 to reflect our new ownership.
In 2016, four new company principals were named principals and owners of the firm:

- Timothy O’Brien, Chief Financial Officer | Executive Vice President
- Antonio Mancini, Vice President of Field Operations, Northeast Region
- Robert G. Dunn, Esq., General Counsel | Vice President
In 2017, KBENY, LLC opened as part of the KBE Companies, led by principal Bruno Guarini. This new office has helped expand our reach into the metropolitan New York marketplace,
In 2018, New Valley Construction joined the KBE Companies, enabling us to work on the West Coast and Western US. At that time, Brad Nydahl and Steve Boscardin, senior leaders of New Valley Construction, joined our ownership team as principals and owners.
Today, the KBE Companies annually bill between $350M and $400M, with a staff of more than 200 providing Preconstruction, Estimating, Construction Management, Design-Build, and General Contracting services. We work with clients in the senior living, higher education, retail, government, commercial, industrial, and other sectors in locations throughout the East Coast, Mid-Atlantic, West Coast and the western US.
