KBE Superintendent Ricardo AndersonRICARDO ANDERSON, PROJECT SUPERINTENDENT
Employed by KBE for 14 Years

What was your job position when you were first hired by KBE and what is your job position today?
I was first hired as a Project Engineer, progressed to Senior Project Engineer, then Assistant Project Manager. I am now a Project Superintendent. I wanted to pursue a job in the field rather than continue on the path to Project Manager. I felt that I needed the field experience so that I had the knowledge of working with trade contractors and others solving issues that aren’t normally faced as a Project Manager.

How has KBE supported you in your career growth?
KBE gave me several opportunities to pursue different career paths – whether it was in the field or as a Project Manager. I’ve worked together with KBE’s Project Executives and Mike Kolakowski [CEO] to succeed on the path of Superintendent.  They steered me along the route and followed up with my progress which helped me to grow. KBE has allowed me to pursue additional safety training classes to fulfill requirements of the job site.

What makes KBE stand out among other employers?
When I first brought my son to participate in the Gift of Gobble [the firm’s annual Thanksgiving donation event], the TV crews interviewed my son – he was nervous and unprepared, but he did well! Our friends and family called me to ask if that was my son on TV, and people were astonished that he made it on TV! To me, this experience made working for KBE more than just a paycheck. It feels special when I can have my family actively involved in my work, and giving back to the communities really stands out.

What do you most look forward to in your job each day?
I look forward to getting another step ahead on the project. Also, getting over the challenge of that day. Finding solutions or overcoming challenges in the field is a great feeling.

In one word, describe the culture at KBE.
Family.

How are employees empowered to help shape or participate in the corporate culture?
KBE participates in a lot of philanthropic events, as well as hosts annual meetings and company parties. All of them help me to experience the culture and the recognition I receive at events for putting in effort is valued and acknowledged.

How have you seen KBE grow throughout the years?
I started with KBE in 2006 and have witnessed lots of changes both here at the company and in the industry in general. The mindset of construction has changed significantly, and I believe KBE has kept up with this shift in mindset. For instance, back then, it was OK to yell at each other to get your point across. The environment was loud in general so you couldn’t pick up the phone and make a call and be heard on the other end. The work/life balance is one of the biggest changes that I’ve seen, where family is valued. The intent is for our people to grow and I feel KBE does a good job with this.

What is one thing that KBE does well for its employees?
Work/life balance promotes growth not just career wise, but also as an individual. The programs they offer helps to develop key skills that are needed in my career path. The benefits are good, too.

What is one thing you would tell someone who is interested in working at KBE?
I would tell them that I love working for KBE, and I will never leave unless they fire me! KBE will take care of you as long as you do what you’re supposed to do.

How would you describe KBE’s leadership?
I like that I can always reach out to any member of KBE leadership and be heard if I chose to. They all know my name, I’m not just a number. I also appreciate that most of them have been brought up and worked in the construction field. They know what they’re talking about because of their experience.
