KBE Renovates Rhode Island Colleges

KINGSTON, R.I., June 18, 2012 — KBE Building Corporation has completed renovations at Rhode Island College and has work underway on two projects for the University of Rhode Island

At Rhode Island College, KBE has completed the $11.5 million renovation and addition to Rhode Island College’s recreation center.

The project included the renovation of the 75,000 square foot, two-story recreation center and a 5,600 square foot recreation center. The project included a new wrestling room, multi-purpose dance studio, cardio fitness room, natatorium and locker rooms, as well as complete interior renovations of the existing locker rooms, the indoor track, and three basketball courts. The recreation center will serve as the primary fitness and weight center for the campus, and also houses a sports medicine area, coaches’ offices, and a field house.

The project was constructed in two phases, and the building remained partially occupied throughout construction.

At the University of Rhode Island, KBE has completed life safety upgrades to University of Rhode Island’s Memorial Union Hall. The $1.9 million project commenced in August 2011 and included a new fire alarm system, new sprinkler system, fire door replacement, stair guard rail, and new ceilings. The work also included architectural renovations to the commuter lounge, replacements of emergency lighting and exit signs, and asbestos abatement.

The facility remained partially occupied throughout the construction, and the upgrades were completed in May.

KBE is also currently constructing a new residence hall for the University of Rhode Island. The $32.8 million project consists of a new five-story, 97,618 square foot residence hall that will include 429 beds, multipurpose spaces, classrooms, and residential life offices.

The building was designed for LEED silver certification, and will feature a solar water heating system, radiant heating, green roofing, recycled building materials, and the use of rain water for the surrounding gardens.

“We are extremely proud to be working at both of these schools,” said Mike Kolakowski, president, CEO and a principal owner of KBE Building Corporation. “Not only is it a great way to create space that is more conducive for learning, but we are very excited for the opportunity to expand the reach of our work in Rhode Island.”

Construction will be completed in August 2012.
